Low Back Pain Research and Outcomes: How to Leverage These Findings for Better Patient Experience and Communicate Benefits to the Public and Payers
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Disparities in the prevalence and management of chronic pain are pervasive in rural communities. The availability of accessible nonpharmacological pain interventions is one source of disparities in rural communities. There is evidence that physical therapists can effectively provide evidence-based nonpharmacologic chronic pain care for persons in rural communities using telehealth, yet the use of telehealth in physical therapy is relatively new and comes with unique challenges. The purpose of this course to provide attendees with the evidence supporting telehealth care provided by physical therapists for persons with chronic back pain, discuss barriers and challenges associated with telehealth pain care and provide strategies to overcome these challenges.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, attendees will be to:
- Describe pain management disparities evident in underserved, rural and minoritized communities.
- Identify strategies to enhance patient engagement and compliance with telehealth physical activity interventions.
- Describe adaptations necessary for telehealth delivery of physical activity interventions.
- Describe strategies to integrate the biopsychosocial model into telehealth pain interventions.
- Describe Motivation and Problem Solving (MAPS) as an approach to telehealth pain care that incorporates motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques in a holistic strategy to foster behavioral change and self-management.
