Common Ethical Dilemmas found in Today's Healthcare Workplace: Resources for Practice
Speaker: Rhea Cohn, PT, DPT
Course Description:
This session will link current physical therapy practice and key ethical concepts. Important resources for practice will be included as well as guidance in the DC Physical Therapy regulations for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. A broad view of ethics will be considered using Glaser’s “Three Realms” and examples of how to operationalize ethical thinking and problem solving will be offered. Moments of reflection and sharing will be included as well as strategies for ethical problem solving that can be used by individuals or groups.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, a participant should be able to:
- Recognize common workplace ethical challenges and their impact on employee performance and morale.
- Ground ethical thinking in key ethical concepts using Glaser’s “three realms”.
- Describe the linkage between the APTA Code of Ethics and the DC Physical Therapy regulations.
- Utilize resources and strategies to reflect on ethical challenges and consider possible solutions.
- Understand the link between malpractice claims and ethical practice.
- Recognize the importance and purpose of APTA’s House of Delegates 2021 resolution pertaining to APTA Components’ ethics infrastructure.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Cohn has worked as a clinician, educator, senior manager, and consultant. Dr. Cohn spent almost twenty years as a practicing clinician in a variety of settings and spent four years inside the managed care industry. Following that experience, she worked at APTA for twelve years and is recognized for her expertise in payment and policy issues. Most recently, Dr. Cohn was an Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Clinical Education at the George Washington University Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She introduced students to a broad view of the healthcare industry including payment, policy issues, and professional development skills including Ethics. Rhea spent seven years as a member of the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and was an invited member of the initial FSBPT workgroup for the Physical Therapy Compact. She has been invited to speak to a variety of audiences that have included clinicians, payers, fraud investigators, students, nurses, and life-care planners. She has been a member of APTA’s Ethics and Judicial Committee (EJC) since July 2019 and will serve as Chair of the EJC in 2023.
